New business index (NBI)

The New business index combines multiple data sources to rate and rank each state on key small business metrics relating to new business.

We track several factors relating to the cost of starting or running a small business with a focus on 1) barriers for start-ups, and 2) the ability of existing businesses to attract and service new business (new customers or new sales to existing customers).

‘State of the small business nation’ annual report

Once a year we combine the New business indexes for the previous 12 months with a range of other sources of Small Business research to publish our State of the Small Business in Australia annual report.
